"Pinks All Out" went great

Blog - in EnglishPosted by Eva Håkansson 15 Aug, 2010 23:29:49
"Pinks All Out" yesterday went great! The stands were full; there were probably 10,000 people there.

Picture: Tracy makes one of KillaCycle best burn-outs ever.

Tracy did one of the best burn-outs of the night (and probably the best KillaCycle burn-out ever) and ran a perfect run in the low 8 seconds. The crowd loved it.

We only got to make one run, but we are happy anyway. We we...re called down for a second run, but there wasn't time for us to run (the usual case with TV filming). After waiting in the lane for two hours, both we and the producers threw in the towel - there simply wasn't time for another run. If we had ran directly when we were ready, we would likely been in the 7's. But after two hours the batteries had cooled down so much that we could only make a 9's, which wouldn't have been a good show anyway.

Nevertheless, we had a great night and want to thank "Sporty" Bandimere and Bandimere Speedway for inviting us.
We also want to thank Riders Discount for Tracy's awesome gear that arrived two days ago. Tracy looked _really_ good in the state-of-the-art Alpinestars suit, boots and gloves. (You'll find Riders Discount in the Pages section to the left).
Last but not least we want to thank the fans that came by yesterday and paid the entry fee to see us run. You all made our day!

The motors are in!

Blog - in EnglishPosted by Eva Håkansson 12 Aug, 2010 08:48:49
The motors are installed in the KillaJoule. Yihoo! The wheel will soon be spinning.... I am still optimistic that we will make "World of Speed" September 15-18 in Bonneville.

Want to get your name in the history books?

Blog - in EnglishPosted by Eva Håkansson 03 Aug, 2010 06:32:17
Want to get your name in the history books?

Imagine having your name or your company logo on the side of Lindberg's "Spirit of St. Louis".
If you help us make history, you can be an indelible part of that history.

We make racing history, routinely. We are often the very first electric to ever compete in many events.

- For $50 (or more) you will get your or your company's name on one side of the KillaJoule streamliner for a year.
(The name will be in a font that is appr. 1 inch (25 mm) high. The length of the name will thus depend on the number of letters). We will have the sticker with the name printed.

- For $100 (or more), you will get the name on _both_ sides of KillaJoule for a year.

- If you want to have your company logo on the vehicle, the cost will be $15 per square inch per side ($2.30 per square centimeter). This is the actual cost of the vehicle, excluding our labor. We prefer if you send us the vinyl logos by mail, we can't make die cut logos.

- For any contribution of at least $100, you will be mentioned on the webpages as "Partner" (corporate contributions) or "Special Thanks" (private contributions).

- For any donation over $5, we will send you a thank you note by mail.

The button below will take you to the our Facebook page where you need to click the button again - donate buttons don't work with my web host by some unknown reason.

(If you want to make a large donation or want to make an in-kind donation - contact us. We can most likely make it tax deductible for you).

Even though we are extremely successful, and are known world-wide, we are a low-budget team, so even modest assistance gets recognition.

The electric streamliner motorcycle KillaJoule has a good chance of becoming the world's fastest electric motorcycle already this year.
We have the technology to become the fastest motorcycle of any kind, but it will take a couple of years (present record is 368 mph = 588 km/h).

Wouldn't it be way cool to be able to say "I helped them do that!"...?

Thanks in advance - you help create a brighter and faster future!

KillaJoule landing gear

Blog - in EnglishPosted by Eva Håkansson 29 Jul, 2010 06:31:03
The design for the KillaJoule landing gear is finalized!
"Landing gear on a motorcycle??!!???!" you might think. Yep, the driver/rider is completely enclosed in a streamliner and can't put down the feet. Without landing gear, the bike will fall over when it stops.

The landing gear will be actuated with an air cylinder. (If you happen to hav...e a 2 inch air cylinder with a 12 inch stroke collecting dust on the shelf - contact us immediately, we are going to order one tomorrow).

KillaJoule design finally finalized

KillaJoule - Land Speed RacingPosted by Eva Håkansson 22 Jul, 2010 08:35:08
After close to one year in front of the drawing board and four design iterations, the KillaJoule body design is finally finalized. You can help us make this reality and write history (see bottom of this post).

Picture: The final body design for KillaJoule.

These days almost all streamliners - motorcycles as well as cars - have composite bodies. Everything shape is possible with composites, the sky is the limit. At least as long as you have deep pockets; an 18 ft (6 m) long composite body is expensive (we are talking several thousands of dollars just for the material).

Unfortunately we don't have deep pockets; our annual budget is what a professional team spends in a weekend. (If you have missed it - the entire KillaCycle/KillaJoule/ElectroCat racing program is Bill’s and my very expensive hobby. We do this all on Bill’s very modest governmental salary, I am a graduate student in mechanical engineering at University of Denver and that doesn’t generate any income).

So, how can one build a streamliner body without the budget for a composite body? The answer is in the history book: aluminum. Traditionally, land speed vehicles were built like airplanes out of aluminum, but when composites were invented they soon became popular because you can make any imaginable shape. However, airplanes are still built out of aluminum and they go really fast (like 500 mph). If an airplane can go 500 mph with an aluminum body, KillaJoule should easily make 200 mph (320 km/h), which is the goal for this year.

Except for the spherical nosecone (that will be made of fiberglass), the entire KillaJoule body will be made of single curved sheets of aluminum. The body will mainly be riveted together – just like you build an airplane. (It is really handy that Bill actually built half an airplane. We sold it to buy the large race trailer, but we still have all the tools left. ;-)

<< You can help us write history! >>

If you happen to have a few hundred square feet of suitable sheet metal, rivets or other “airplane material” hanging around – we would be happy to help you get more room in your garage.
Whoever can help us with material will get his or her name on the side of the vehicle as well in the history books…. We are going to order material very soon, so if you can help us – contact me immediately. eva@killacycle.com

<< 90 horsepower for 200 mph... >>

Oh, I almost forgot to mentioned the most amazing: the CF Design computational fluid dynamics simulation shows that this body design will take 90 horsepower to push the motorcycle to 200 mph (320 km/h). Yes - you read it correctly - 90 HP! I am initially going to borrow KillaCycle's spare drivetrain (a 1000 amp Zilla controller, a 990 cell A123Systems pack and 2 series wound motors). This drive package will barely be jogging at 90 HP...

PBS Nova films the KillaCycle at Bandimere

Blog - in EnglishPosted by Eva Håkansson 18 Jul, 2010 08:11:16
The KillaCycle crew spent the day with David Pogue and the PBS Nova film crew yesterday (July 16th), They are doing a show about advanced battery technology.

Picture: Bill with David Pogue from PBS Nova.

Until they actually saw the first run at Bandimere Speedway, they did not fully believe “Zero to 60 mph in less than one second.” The film crew was not prepared for the acceleration on the launch. After the first run, they said, “It was on the starting line…and then it was just GONE!”

Picture: Electric Burn-out

The camera crew attached little mini-cams all over the KillaCycle (and the ElectroCat ). They got fantastic action footage. Since the KillaCycle is an all-out racing machine, we did not concern ourselves with AC magnetic shielding or trying to minimize stray fields like you would do on a street EV. (Like you would not add a muffler to a racing ICE machine.) Thus, there were some very weird distortions in some of the on-board video footage. Kind of like science fiction force-field looking effects. We hope they show these “force field” clips.

It was a great pleasure meeting and working with the Nova team.
